Who Is This Guy?

After being rushed to Kansas City from Double A Wichita on Aug. 2
to fill in for the injured Jose Lima, 22-year-old rookie
lefthander Jimmy Gobble helped keep the Royals in the battle for
first in the AL Central with two superb outings. He was 2-0 and
had allowed one run in 12 1/3 innings after beating the Devil
Rays 6-2 last Saturday. "He certainly doesn't pitch like a rookie
out of Double A," said Tampa Bay manager Lou Piniella.

Gobble, who relies on a low-90s fastball and a good curve, has
exhibited big league poise and impeccable control. Lima is
scheduled to come off the disabled list next week, but with
injuries to two other starters, the plan is for Gobble to stick
around Kansas City and log important innings down the stretch.
"With the way he approaches each game and his mound presence,
he's pitching like a veteran," says manager Tony Pena. "He
doesn't let anything bother him."
