It was billed as the Big Shootout and later became known as the
Game of the Century. On Dec. 6, 1969, in Fayetteville, Ark., with
President Nixon on hand to give a plaque to the winner declaring
it the unofficial national champion, No. 1 Texas edged No. 2
Arkansas 15-14 on a fourth-quarter touchdown. Four weeks later
Texas beat Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl to officially earn the
national title.
