After losing more than $42 million in the first six months of
2003, CART appeared to be on its deathbed until a group headed by
Paul Gentilozzi purchased the open-wheel series two weeks ago.
But with no major television contract and no major American
personalities, CART's long-term prospects remain bleak....
Sunday's EA SPORTS 500 at Talladega was the first race at which
NASCAR teams had the option of installing the recently approved
escape hatch, which enables drivers to exit more quickly in the
event of an in-car fire. The only driver to install the hatch was
6'5" Michael Waltrip--and he used it, but not for an accident.
Waltrip won the race, parked in the infield and popped out of the
roof like a jack-in-the-box. Expect most drivers to have the
hatch in place next season.
