The son of a Las Vegas casino manager, Jackson isn't on many
Heisman watch lists yet, but don't bet against him. The 6'3",
229-pound junior, who has the speed to break away in the open
field and the strength to run over defenders, is ranked second in
the nation in rushing (146.2 yards a game) and has gone over 100
yards in 11 consecutive regular-season games. Cal cornerback
Daymeion Hughes watched Jackson burn the Bears for 227 yards and
three touchdowns in a 35-21 Oregon State win on Oct. 4, and
Hughes cast his vote. "Steven Jackson for the Heisman," he said.
"That's the best back we've seen all year, and we've played some
good ones."
