Serena Williams WIMBLEDON CHAMPION

December 29, 2003

Call her Lawn Chaney. Serena Williams had women's tennis cowed,
if not terrified. She dispatched all opponents on the grass at
Wimbledon to win her second major of the year. Not even a
left-knee injury seemed likely to keep her from repeating as U.S.
Open champ. But Williams wouldn't play again in 2003. Knee
surgery and distress over the death of her sister Yetunde Price
kept her out for the rest of the year.
