In The Crease

If general manager Larry Pleau can't make a deal for a veteran
defenseman before the March 9 trade deadline, the Blues won't
make the playoffs. Because of injuries to Al MacInnis and Barret
Jackman, defenseman Chris Pronger has had to play extra minutes
and has already lost 15 pounds this season. He was so fatigued in
a 2-1 win over Calgary last Thursday that he had a hard time
breathing during and after the game.... Here's another reason why
the Rangers are in such a bad way: They let forward Nils Ekman,
who last season scored 30 goals in 57 games for their top farm
team in Hartford, get away. After Teemu Selanne bolted the Sharks
for the Avalanche last summer, the Rangers traded Ekman to San
Jose for left wing Chad Wiseman; at the All-Star break Ekman had
more goals (14 to 13) and points (30 to 28) than Selanne.... The
Canucks are making a major mistake by not extending G.M. Brian
Burke's contract before the end of the season. Burke has done a
masterly job in turning around a wayward franchise that was
losing big money and did not have much of an identity. Vancouver
gave coach Marc Crawford a contract extension in January, but the
Canucks are taking a chance that Burke could walk if they don't
lock him up soon.
