Szuminski Watch

March 29, 2004

Padres pitcher and rocket scientist Jason Szuminski, 25, is
trying to become the first MIT grad to make the majors. How's he
doing? SI's Szuminskimeter tells all.

In two outings last week Szuminski went two innings, allowing
just one hit and striking out four while lowering his ERA to
1.23. While manager Bruce Bochy says Szuminski has a shot at the
final spot in the Padres' crowded bullpen, as a Rule 5 pick
Szuminski must be offered back to the Cubs if he doesn't make San
Diego's roster. But G.M. Kevin Towers has been so impressed with
Szuminski that he's talking with Chicago about keeping him in the
Padres' organization if he doesn't make the big club.
