Szuminski Watch

April 04, 2004

Padres pitcher and rocket scientist Jason Szuminski, 25, is
trying to become the majors' first MIT grad. How is he doing?
SI's Szuminskimeter tells all.

With one week of spring training left, no Padres reliever had
pitched more innings than Szuminski. In 1111/43 innings he has a
2.38 ERA and seven strikeouts. If that's not good enough to make
the Padres' crowded bullpen, he needn't despair. Szuminski, as a
Rule 5 pick, must be offered back to the Cubs if San Diego
doesn't bring him up. But he'd have to clear waivers, meaning any
pitching-poor team could snap him up. "I feel like I've shown I
belong here," he says.
