Faces in the Crowd

Luke Vanderham, TIPTON, CALIF.
Baseball
Luke, a junior lefthander at Central Valley Christian High, tied
a 37-year-old Central Section conference record by throwing his
fourth no-hitter of the season in a 10-0 win over Parlier. He has
a 6-2 record this year with 90 strikeouts in 59 innings and a
1.60 ERA.

Starr Orr, DANVILLE, ALA.
Basketball
Starr, a senior forward at Speake High, was named Alabama's Miss
Basketball by the state's sportswriters' association. Her total
of 4,158 points makes her Alabama's alltime leading girls'
scorer, and she is a two-time Class 1A player of the year.

Jackson Kyle, FREEPORT, MAINE
Snowboarding
Jackson, an eighth-grader at North Yarmouth Academy, was the
overall freestyle champion (12-13 age group) at the USA Snowboard
Association national championships. He finished fifth in the
halfpipe competition and third in the slopestyle event.

Kelly Dyer, EUGENE, ORE.
Softball
Kelly, a sophomore righthander and the only pitcher for Churchill
High, threw two perfect games in three days and also went 4 for 4
with two homers in the second game. She is 14-3 with 153
strikeouts in 118 innings and has a 0.28 ERA. She is batting
.592.

Mike Smart, NAPANEE, ONT.
Basketball
Smart, a senior guard at Carleton University, led the Ravens--who
had a 28-0 season and have a 50-game winning streak--to their
second straight Canadian Interuniversity Sport national title. He
was named the tournament MVP.

Ginny Walsh, AUSTIN
Swimming
Ginny, a senior at St. Andrew's Episcopal School, swam the
Pailolo Channel between Maui and Molokai, becoming, at 17, the
youngest person to swim across a Hawaiian channel. She covered
the 9.1-mile distance in five hours.

Kyle Palmieri, MONTVALE, N.J.
Hockey
Kyle, a seventh-grader at Fieldstone Middle School and a center
for the Ramapo Saints, was the leading scorer in the Youth Tier I
national hockey championships, earning 14 points in four games.
He led the Atlantic League for the season with 40 goals.
