Colin Montgomerie says he has separated from his wife of 14
years, Eimear, "with a view to divorce." This follows reports
that Eimear, who has three children with Monty, had been spending
time with the British actor Hugh Grant. But don't feel sorry for
the 40-year-old Scot. He's being comforted by Line Cordes, a
21-year-old Dane who is a member of the Coastal Carolina golf
team.... Using a USGA-approved 460-cc driver and with the aid of
a 20-mph tailwind, Scott Smith, 34, set a long-drive record with
a blast of 539 yards last Thursday in Albuquerque. Smith
shattered the previous record of 511 yards set by Ryan Gearhart
in 2002.... After an Italian Open spectator refused to turn off
his cellphone, Ian Poulter of England took matters into his own
hands. "I asked if I could have the phone, and he gave it to me,"
said Poulter. "So I turned it off and put it in the [trash] bin."
The European tour is considering fining Poulter.... Mike (Fluff)
Cowan will caddie for Michelle Wie at this week's LPGA Michelob
Ultra Open at Kingsmill. Perhaps Wie should carry a rabbit's
foot. Two of Fluff's most recent employers, Jim Furyk and Peter
Jacobsen, are injured.... Mark Roe, the Englishman who was third
at last year's British Open when he was disqualified for signing
the wrong scorecard, was unimpressed with the R&A's new plan to
put five club members in the scorer's tent to double-check cards
and ensure that such a mishap doesn't happen again. "For
goodness' sake," says Roe, "the answer is not employing more
[score recorders] but simply employing professional recorders."
... Mark O'Meara was spotted last week at the K Club in Straffan,
Ireland, site of the '06 Ryder Cup, fueling speculation that the
47-year-old is angling for the U.S. captaincy.
