Earthwind Moreland

Patriots Cornerback

FOUR YEARS out of Georgia Southern, the 5'10", 182-pound defender has been on six NFL teams and had a stint in NFL Europe. He latched on to New England's practice squad in September and got his first NFL start on Nov. 14 against the Bills. Now, about that name: "My mother was really into the band," says Moreland, 27, of the 1970s-era R&B group Earth, Wind & Fire. "Luckily, I think they're pretty good too--I really like their song Reasons. When I introduce myself to people, their first reaction is they can't believe it's a real name. After I assure them, the second question is, 'So what's your middle name? And fire?' My middle name is actually Chatavian. It doesn't mean anything. My mother just thought it sounded good: Earthwind Chatavian Moreland." --Lisa Altobelli
