Faces in the Crowd

In the tradition of SI's Sportsman of the Year, we periodically pay tribute in this space to men and women who represent the ideals of sportsmanship
March 07, 2005

Marvin Rogoff
BOCA RATON, FLA.

Rogoff, 77, a retired garment-industry executive, has collected 26,000 clubs for Golf Fore Kids, which he founded in 1999 to provide clubs for underfunded school and youth programs. He has given clubs to the Special Olympics and more than 25 other organizations in 42 states.

Katie O'Keefe
DOVER, N.H.

O'Keefe, 23, a Spanish and humanities teacher and girls' basketball coach at St. Thomas Aquinas High, spent the past two summers in Tarija, Bolivia, working on construction projects with the Center for Student Leadership. The group enlarged the Zuriel School and built a basketball court.

B.J. Viau
APPLE VALLEY, MINN.

B.J., a senior guard on the basketball team at Eastview High, hosts his eighth annual Hoop-a-thon on March 6 to raise money to fight Huntington's disease. He started the free throw contest after his mother, Debbie, was diagnosed with the genetic disorder. The event has raised nearly $300,000.

Will Conroy
CHARLOTTE

Conroy, 22, an assistant editor for Street & Smith's, an assistant football coach at Charlotte Country Day School and a former All-Ivy center at Yale, raised more than $3,000 in pledges to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by running in the Walt Disney World Marathon.

Mark Garratt and Peter Grant
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF.

Garratt and Grant, both 49-year-old businessmen, headed up a drive that raised $200,000 to save South Tahoe High and Middle School sports programs for the current academic year after a tax to support those activities was voted down. If the school board implements a pay-to-play program next year, as expected, the men's group, the South Tahoe Athletic Team, will offer sports scholarships to less affluent students.
