Pierre McGuire's In The Crease

March 20, 2006

There were no blockbusters before the trade deadline, but several teams did get help, including these four. The Canucks added depth with the acquisition of defensemen Keith Carney (above) and Eric Weinrich, plus netminder Mika Noronen, who is a top prospect. By getting goalie Dwayne Roloson, who doesn't give up many rebounds, the Oilers alleviated the pressure on their big-minute defensemen; and left wing Sergei Samsanov brings instant offense and an ability to score off the rush. The Rangers needed help on the power play and got the right guy in Sandis Ozolinsh, a solid puck mover who can shoot from the point. Defenseman Brendan Witt will give the Predators a physical presence in the playoffs.
