During a pit stopon the 150th lap of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, Sam Hornish Jr. pulled awaybefore the fuel hose could be removed, knocking over a crewman who was thendoused with water (inset) to prevent him from being burned. Hornish overcame apenalty assessed by race officials for the mishap and won by the second-closestmargin in 500 history (page 58).

Virginiamidfielder Kyle Dixon couldn't get off this shot, but he and his teammatescashed in on enough of their chances against UMass in the NCAA men's lacrossefinal; attack Matt Ward and midfielder Matt Poskay (inset, with Ward left)scored five goals each in a 15-7 victory on Monday in Philadelphia. Sixstraight second-half goals broke open a close game and propelled the Cavaliers(17-0) to their fourth national title.
