Greenside with Envy
U.S. players, with their significant others, caddies and captain Tom Lehman (standing, far right), watched teammate Chad Campbell miss a putt on 18 that would have won a foursomes match in the Ryder Cup last Saturday at the K Club in Straffan, Ireland. The Europeans ended the day leading 10--6, en route to an 18½--9½ drubbing. Darren Clarke (inset, left) and Lee Westwood celebrated the Euros' third straight title (page 54).

Come Padre
When reliever Trevor Hoffman jogged from the bullpen to the mound last Saturday night in San Diego he trailed Lee Smith by one on the alltime saves list. He pitched a scoreless ninth to save the Padres' 2--1 victory over the Pirates for number 478, then celebrated the record-setter the following day (inset) after saving another 2--1 win over Pittsburgh (page 25).

Racing Stripes
In the Bengals come-from-behind, 28--20 victory in Pittsburgh on Sunday (page 48), quarterback Carson Palmer (9) turned to hand off to a hard-charging Rudi Johnson (foreground). Facing the Steelers for the first time since suffering a serious knee injury against them in last season's playoffs, Palmer threw four touchdown passes, including two to Chris Henry (inset).
