COACHES SENT HOME
York High (Elmhurst, Ill.) cross-country coach Joe Newton (right), who has won 25 state championships in a 51-year career, and his assistant, Charlie Kern, were suspended last Friday for the rest of the season by the school because they ran a summer camp that exceeded by 10 days the state limit of 25 days that coaches are allowed to work with their runners in the off-season. Ranked No. 1 in the state, the Dukes were coached in the sectionals on Saturday by track coach Stan Reddel, advancing to the state meet this weekend.
Eric Gordon, 17, a senior guard at North Central High (Indianapolis), told The Indianapolis Star last week that he had received threatening messages on his MySpace.com page from Fighting Illini fans after he switched his oral commitment from Illinois to Indiana.

HE'LL TAKE MANHATTAN
Bill Walker, 18, a 6'6" point guard who teamed with O.J. Mayo for two state championships at North College Hill High (Cincinnati), has been admitted to Kansas State and could play for the Wildcats by December. Walker (with ball), his high school eligibility used up, recently took the ACT and earned a final English credit from North College, allowing him to graduate.
Already the national leader in touchdowns and passing yards, Prosser (Wash.) High senior QB Kellen Moore completed 23 of 27 passes for 385 yards and eight TDs during a 76--8 rout of Wapato on Friday.
