Roger Federer celebrated his Australian Open championship—he didn't lose a set in seven matches—after defeating Fernando Gonzalez in Melbourne on Sunday for his 10th Grand Slam title (page 50). Later that day Tiger Woods (inset) rallied to conquer the Buick Invitational field in San Diego, earning his seventh straight PGA Tour victory and further fueling the debate over which of the two is more dominant in his sport (page 18).
All Strung Up
Competitors in the Tough Guy challenge tackled the 40-foot ladder on Sunday near Wolverhampton, England. The annual race, in which contestants must also crawl under barbed wire (inset), includes 21 obstacles and takes place over 150 acres. Almost 5,000 men and women entered.
On Monday, eight months after shattering three bones in his right hind leg at the Preakness, Barbaro was euthanized. The Kentucky Derby winner (left) had undergone a series of extraordinary life-saving procedures at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center (inset), but myriad ailments, including laminitis in three hooves, led to the decision to spare the colt further pain. Well-wishers had poured $1.2 million into the Barbaro Fund, which will be used for new veterinary hospital equipment (page 19).
