TOIVONEN'S DIGITS are an homage to his father, Harri, who was born in 1954. "I can't thank my parents enough," says Toivonen. "Hockey's not cheap." Hannu's younger brother, Juha, is also a goalie. (He played for Finland in the World Junior championships.) Says Hannu, of his upbringing, "They take you to the rink, they take the other kid to the rink. You get one guy home, you get the other guy home. You feed them, support them, get them to school, get them out of school. I find it amazing. They supported us every day, good times and bad. They're still doing it." So how did Hannu show his mother, Riitta, some love? He wore 57, for her birth year, in juniors.
DANIEL AND HENRIK SEDIN
THE IDENTICAL 26-year-old twins were given the numbers after Vancouver selected Daniel No. 2 and Henrik No. 3 in the 1999 NHL entry draft. "Just a nice reminder" of who got taken first, says Daniel (top head shot), who is the younger of the two by six minutes. The palindromic figures are just another reason why it's hard to tell the Swedish brothers apart, especially given their nearly equivalent NHL statistics—through Sunday, Daniel had 285 points in 461 games, Henrik had 282 points in 465 games. Says Henrik, "I always say he was picked first because D comes before H in the alphabet."
