The Beat

The Carmelo Anthony story: Sleepless in Denver. The NBA's leading scorer and fiancée LaLa Vazquez (below), an MTV veejay, welcomed their first child, a son they named Kiyan, last Wednesday. Another big scorer is going to be a daddy soon. Gilbert Arenas's girlfriend, Laura Govan, is due any day with their second child. Last week on his NBA.com blog, Arenas pondered possible names but admitted he might need more time to come up with the right one. "He needs a nice, cool, playa name," Arenas wrote. "But he might leave [the hospital] as Little Boy Arenas." ... President Bill Clinton got good news on Sunday when his favorite team, Arkansas, sneaked into the NCAA tournament. He'll discuss the Razorbacks' chances this Friday on James Carville's XM radio show, 60/20. (Carville's alma mater, LSU, didn't make the field.) Clinton and the Ragin' Cajun will offer their picks on every NCAA tournament game.... James Van Der Beek, who played a high school quarterback in 1999's Varsity Blues, will star as a pro football player in ABC's Americanization of the British drama Footballers' Wive$, a soap about the lurid lives of soccer spouses. Football Wives could debut in the fall if the pilot is picked up.
