What to watch and watch for

FRIDAY 8/29
Deutsche Bank Championship
The PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs began last week, and Mike Weir (right) had his game face on: The Canadian showed up for the Barclays tournament sporting a beard. "I guess the old hockey player in me thought we'll keep it out there," he said. Weir jumped from 43rd to 18th in the FedEx standings after tying for seventh in Paramus, N.J. The top 70 after Boston's Deutsche Bank event will stay alive in the FedEx Cup chase.

IAAF Golden League
It's right back to work for Jamaican wonder Usain Bolt (page 160). Five days after the closing ceremonies the triple Olympic champion will run the 100 meters in Zurich, where he can add some cash to his pile of gold medals. Bolt will earn six figures just for appearing and will take home another $93,000 if he breaks his world record.
ESPN Classic 4 p.m.

SATURDAY 8/30
Appalachian State at LSU
The Tigers won't ease into their NCAA title defense: LSU opens the season against a team expecting another high-profile upset. "They're licking their chops," Mountaineers coach Jerry Moore (above) said of his players, who pulled off a shocker in 2007 against Michigan. "It's, Let's go get LSU." App State won last year's Division I-AA championship.
ESPN 5 p.m.

TUESDAY 9/2
Yankees at Rays
New York plays Tampa Bay six times this month and the Red Sox three times—but will it —matter? Through Sunday the Yanks were 9 1/2 games behind the AL East--leading Rays and five games out of the wild-card spot. Said Derek Jeter (left), who's on the verge of missing the postseason for the first time in his 13-year career, "I don't look at it as a crisis, but every game is becoming that much more important."

Hey Rookie, Welcome to the NFL
Follow Chiefs defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey and four other highly touted first-year players from the draft to their first pro snaps. You'll see intense workouts, career growing pains and—they are rookies, after all—not a little hazing.

SI PICK OF THE WEEK

WEDNESDAY 9/3
America's Game
Tom Coughlin has more immediate concerns, like the Redskins, but the night before New York kicks off the NFL season, the rest of Giants Nation can relive last year's Super Bowl run. This special has interviews with Coughlin, QB Eli Manning (above) and retired defensive end Michael Strahan and reveals intimate details about the season. What did Strahan really think about being fined for his training-camp holdout? Who had an awful practice two days before the Super Bowl? Who was the team's best bowler? Watch and learn.
NFL Network 9 p.m.
