Dr. Z's Pick of the Week

September 28, 2008

They areafterthoughts, second options, bailouts. Vikings QB Gus Frerotte is 37, aveteran of 15 NFL seasons and eight clubs. The Titans' Kerry Collins is 35, andhis résumé includes five teams and 14 seasons. But when things startedcrumbling around them this year, they were rushed into action. Collins tookover after Vince Young suffered a sprained knee and an emotional meltdown inthe opener, and he's led Tennessee to a pair of workmanlike wins. Frerotte(above) beat Carolina last week, after coach Brad Childress decided TarvarisJackson wasn't ready to lead the Vikings after all.

These teamsbelieve in old-fashioned values: sturdy defense, sound running game. Each has adazzling back—Adrian Peterson in Minnesota, breathtakingly quick rookie ChrisJohnson in Tennessee. Combined rushing yards will outnumber passing yards whenthey meet this Sunday. I like the home-team Titans in a low scorer.

Dr. Z picks moreweekend games, Thursdays at SI.com.
