John, a 6'4" senior guard at Station Camp High, surpassed 3,000 points with a career-best 60 in a 103--97 double-overtime loss to Gallatin. The nation's leading scorer with a 42.7 average at week's end, he scored 30 or more points and shot 49% or better from the field in each of his 28 games.

Mak, a freshman at Oregon State, was awarded scores higher than 9.9 in the uneven bars in back-to-back meets against Utah (9.950) and Arizona State (9.925). In the latter meet she also received a 9.850 for the floor exercise and a 9.800 for the balance beam to repeat as the Pac-10's special performer of the week.

Christian, a senior third baseman at Kennedy-Kendrick Catholic High, won the International High School Power Showcase Home Run Derby; he hit 19 homers before reaching 40 outs to beat 68 other top high school hitters from nine countries.

WOODLAND, CALIF. > Softball
Schloredt, a senior catcher at Sacramento State, hit three home runs to lead the Hornets to a pair of wins over Pacific in a season-opening doubleheader. The 2008 Pacific Coast Softball Conference MVP hit multiple homers on opening day in each of the last three seasons.

JACKSONVILLE > Track and Field
Lawrence, a freshman sprinter at Georgia, ran the fastest 200 meters of the NCAA indoor season with a school-record 20.77 seconds. Also, at the Tyson Invitational at Arkansas he won the 400 and anchored the winning 4 √ó 400 relay team, to earn SEC male runner of the week honors for the second time.

Brittany Viola
ORLANDO > Diving
Viola, a junior at Miami and the defending 10-meter platform national champion, will compete at the FINA world championships in Rome in May after she had five top-three finishes in the platform (three) and springboard (two) competition at USA Diving's world championship team-selection camp.
