THIS WEEK'S MAIN EVENT

VALERO TEXAS OPEN

Low Land

Since the Texas Open moved to the Resort course at LaCantera Golf Club in1995, the winner has averaged 18.4 under par on the hilly, 6,881-yard layout, and Tommy Armour III set the PGA Tour's 72-hole scoring record with a 26-under254 in 2003. Next year the tournament will move to 7,522-yard TPC San Antonio, meaning the gunslingers have only one more shot at going superlow. A likelycandidate to do so is Justin Leonard, a native son who has three top 10s so farthis year and has won three times at LaCantera (2000, '01 and '07), twiceshooting 261—which is the second-lowest total in the Resort course's run.

Lone Stars

Texas and the PGA Tour go back a long way. The Texas Open dates to 1922; theByron Nelson to '44; the Colonial and the Houston Open to '46. The state hasproduced 11 of the Tour's top 50 alltime winners. The top six are listed below. The active Texan with the most wins? That's right, Justin Leonard, who with 12W's has a way to go to crack this list.
