THIS WEEK'S MAIN EVENT

LPGA tour championship

The Shin Slam?

Even if Jiyai Shin doesn't win this week, she has a chance to make LPGA history. Shin, a 21-year-old from South Korea, has already wrapped up rookie of the year and leads the player-of-the-year and money-list races. She's also second in scoring average, but only .05 of a stroke behind the leader, Lorena Ochoa. The only person to win all four of those honors in one year was Nancy Lopez, who accomplished the sweep in 1978, when she won nine events. If Shin finishes ahead of Ochoa and beats her by enough to make up the difference in stroke average, Shin's season could rank with the best ever on the tour.

POY Story

A mere eight points separate Shin and Ochoa in the race for player of the year, although Shin has played in three more events. Only the top 10 players in each event earn points, as follows: 1st 30; 2nd 12; 3rd 9; 4th 7; 5th 6; 6th 5; 7th 4; 8th 3; 9th 2; and 10th 1. With as much as a 30-point swing possible in Houston, the POY award is still up for grabs. Here's how the race has played out over the course of the season.
