MATT WIETERS
  • Highly drafted catchers who can hit and play defense come around less often than playoff games at Camden Yards—which is why Baltimore has built a suddenly promising future around Matt Wieters. No two ways about it: The Orioles are sitting on the most sought-after commodity in the game.

SETH DAVIS'S Three-Pointer

The Pac-10 looks like a multibid conference after all. With an RPI ranking of 19, Cal (21--9 at week's end) has a great chance to get an at-large spot in the NCAAs even if it loses in the conference tournament; Arizona State (22--9) and Washington (21--9) also might have enough wins to be considered.... Don't expect Gonzaga coach Mark Few(below) to replace Ernie Kent at Oregon next season. A Creswell, Ore., native, Few will be the Ducks' top choice, but he is happy and secure in Spokane and has turned down other offers from power conferences.... Rick Majerus is doing a terrific coaching job with St. Louis, the second-most inexperienced team in Division I (11 of 12 players are freshmen or sophomores), which has won eight of its last 10 games to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10.
