LEADING OFF

June 27, 2010

Papi Pop-up

Red Sox DH David Ortiz and Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero followed the ball after Ortiz sent it skyward in the third inning of their game in Boston on June 15. Montero made the catch for the first out. Ortiz went 2 for 4, including a two-run homer, as the Sox won 6--3.

Night Watch

In a squatters' camp in Kliptown, near the Johannesburg township of Soweto, soccer fans set a small bonfire and watched the World Cup game between South Africa and Uruguay on June 16. The home team lost 3--0 and faced elimination with one group match to play (page 46).

Sweet 16

As guards tried to hold back cheering fans, Lakers forwards Pau Gasol (16) and Ron Artest (foreground) reveled in their 83--79 victory over Rajon Rondo (9) and the Celtics in Game 7 of the NBA Finals in Los Angeles last Thursday. The win gave the Lakers their 16th title, one short of Boston's record (page 40).
