NEPTUNE, N.J. > Track and Field

Ajeé, a sophomore at Neptune High, won the 800 meters (2:05.75) at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships last Friday. On June 18 she ran the 800 anchor leg of the sprint medley relay at the New Balance Nationals in 2:00.59, passing five competitors and leading the Scarlet Fliers to victory with the fourth-best U.S. high school time ever in the event (3:52.74).

Andrew Butz

VERO BEACH, FLA. > Tennis

Andrew, a senior at Saint Edward's School, took the state Class 1A singles championship for the second consecutive year, winning 7--6, 6--3. He also teamed with fellow senior Conner Pickering to win the doubles title 6--1, 6--3 as the Pirates placed second overall. Andrew, who finished the season with a 19--0 record in singles, will play at Florida.

Kirsten Verdun

COAL CITY, ILL. > Softball

Kirsten, a senior pitcher at Coal City High, struck out nine and allowed one hit in a 5--0 win over Johnston City in the state Class 2A title game to finish the season with a 40--0 record. In 2010 she tossed 10 no-hitters, including four perfect games. Kirsten had an 82--4 record in three varsity seasons and got a hit in 72 straight games.

Christina Whitelaw

COLORADO SPRINGS > Soccer

Christina, a senior at St. Mary's High, assisted on the game-winning goal by Dawn Reachard to help lift the Pirates to a 1--0 win in the state Class 3A championship game. In 2009, Christina scored both goals in the team's 2--0 title-game win. The 3A player of the year in both seasons, she earned the same honor as a point guard on the basketball team in '09.

Larry Niemeyer

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA > Softball

Niemeyer, the softball coach at Jefferson High, became the first high school coach in any sport to reach 2,000 wins. At week's end his combined record at Adel and Jefferson since 1961 was 2,009--412. A member of the national high school coaches' hall of fame, Niemeyer is also Jefferson's girls' basketball coach and is third on Iowa's alltime wins list in that sport, with 853.

Thomas Barrows and Allison Blecher

ST. THOMAS, V.I., AND FULLERTON, CALIF. > Sailing

Barrows, a senior at Yale, and Blecher, a senior at Charleston, were named the men's and women's collegiate sailors of the year. Barrows won 31 races; Blecher took the A Division at the ICSA championships, helping the Cougars to the title.
