Broken English

German midfielder Thomas Mueller emphatically delivered the final goal of a 4--1 World Cup victory over England on Sunday in Bloemfontein, South Africa (page 48). The 20-year-old Mueller beat goalkeeper David James (in yellow) twice in the second half as the Mannschaft advanced to face Argentina in the quarterfinals.

His Level Best

Clemson second baseman Mike Freeman made an extensive—but unsuccessful—bid to catch a shot by Arizona State's Zack MacPhee during their College World Series game in Omaha on June 21. Clemson defeated the Sun Devils 6--3 but was eliminated last Saturday by South Carolina, which went on to face UCLA for the championship.

Crystal Gazing

A determined Crystal Manning eyed a landing spot for her triple jump last Thursday in Des Moines at the USA Track & Field Championships (page 29). A former Big 12 indoor long and triple jump champion for Kansas, Manning produced a best effort of 41'9¼", which placed her 14th; Erica McLain won with a jump of 46'6¼".
