The defending World Cup champ lost the downhill to German rival and friend Maria Riesch, but on Sunday she got her first victory of the season with a win in the Super G.

LONELY HEART'S CLUB It wasn't a good year for Tiger Woods, and he took out months of frustration on his fairway wood after landing in the rough during the last round of the Chevron World Challenge on Sunday. Woods had a four-stroke lead when the day began but lost in a playoff to Graeme McDowell. It was his first career defeat after taking at least a three-stroke lead into a final round, and the collapse capped Woods's first winless year since he became a pro in 1996.

CHALK UP ANOTHER Kansas guard Tyrel Reed took an inbounds pass during a 77--76 win at home over UCLA last Thursday. Reed scored 17 points, tied for the team lead and—with Rock, Chalk, Jayhawk chants ringing out—helped No. 4 Kansas win its 64th straight at Allen Fieldhouse, the longest home winning streak in the country.

FROM THE VAULT DON MEREDITH 1938--2010 Sometimes it was easy to forget that before he was a beloved, wisecracking, Cosell-baiting, color man on Monday Night Football, Don Meredith was a pretty fair player as well. He was a three-time Pro Bowler and quarterbacked the Cowboys to two NFL title games, including the infamous Ice Bowl in Green Bay in 1967 (right). Meredith died on Sunday at the age of 72 (page 16).
