TECH TALK

Twist Ending

The RIP, the most popular line of the No. 1 shaft on Tour, according to Aldila, offers control by limiting torque

For better golfers, a shaft's ability to resist torque, or twisting, is an important element in controlling ball flight, especially on longer clubs like drivers and fairway metals. Aldila created a shaft with lower torque by reversing the manufacturing process so that the diagonally oriented wraps of graphite, which resist twisting, are on the outside, where they are most effective.

Graphite sheets wrapped at 45° angles reduce torque. In the RIP shaft they are the outer layer.

Longitudinal wraps control stiffness and are typically placed over the diagonal layers.

The farther a sheet of graphite is from the center of the shaft, the more effective it is. So the diagonally oriented exterior emphasizes torque control.
