"For me, it's all about feel. If I like it and it looks good and then when I hit it I feel I can control the ball and the flight, that's good enough for me."

TECH TALK

PUMPING IRONS

Titleist's AP1 and AP2 use a combination of materials and improved manufacturing to increase performance

DESIGNING IRONS is an exercise in compromise. Making the club larger and increasing the perimeter weighting will improve stability and forgiveness, but adding those elements usually moves the center of gravity away from the hosel, which decreases workability. With its new irons, Titleist set out to maintain the workability and increase the overall forgiveness of the clubs. The designers achieved their goal by keeping the length of the blade, and therefore the center of gravity, the same while adding weight to the heel and toe. The illustration shows how this was accomplished in the AP2.

The cradle is made from a thinner carbon steel, which removes weight from the club.

The grams saved elsewhere are shifted to high-density tungsten weights in the heel and toe.

An insert co-molded out of aluminum and a soft elastomer dampens vibrations, so designers can fine-tune the sound and feel at impact.
