A lovely 6--0 start—Illinois's best beginning in 60 years—has turned into a 6--6 nightmare in Champaign. The Illini (still bowl eligible!) fired head coach Ron Zook (34--51 in seven seasons) after last Saturday's 27--7 loss to hapless Minnesota.

The most amazing thing about Michigan's 40--34 win over Ohio State last Saturday? UM students could brag about the rivalry win on Facebook for the first time ever. The social media site was still a year away when UM last beat OSU, in 2003.
NOT: BRUINS IN RUINS
Basketball hype is gone at 1--4 UCLA, where Reeves Nelson was suspended one game, then missed a flight to Hawaii. The football team? A 50--0 loss to USC, UCLA's worst in the series since 1930, cost coach Rick Neuheisel his job on Monday.
HOT: BRIAN'S SWEET SONG
Blues goalie Brian Elliott racked up his third shutout of the season last week and has allowed two or fewer goals in each of his first 12 games, a feat last matched by Bruins HOF'er Frank Brimsek, in 1938--39.
NOT: A WEE BIT WIDE
Chargers kicker Nick Novak had two shots at beating the Broncos and pushed both late FGs to the right, but the most embarrassing part of his Sunday occurred on the sidelines, where cameras captured him urinating during the fourth quarter.
