Seven years ago, when women's ski jumping pioneers such as Lindsey Van of the U.S. were just beginning a long fight for the sport's Olympic inclusion, which was granted last spring, Sarah Hendrickson (right) was a grade schooler in Park City, Utah. Now she is among the favorites to win the sport's first Olympic gold medal, in 2014 in Sochi. Hendrickson, 17, the youngest woman ever named to the U.S. Nordic ski team (at age 15, in '09), won the first-ever women's World Cup competition last Saturday in Lillehammer. Teammate Van missed the competition with an ankle injury, but she expects to return to the Cup circuit in January.
