FOR THE VALERO TEXAS OPEN

"I've got this hybrid [15°] I like because I can get a high trajectory. I've experimented with some other clubs, but nothing has the feel and consistency of this one."

TaylorMade's Ghost Manta putter marries mallet and bullet

A STROLL AROUND

the putter display at your local Golf Barn will reveal an array of flat sticks worthy of a science fiction movie—crazy-looking things with flanges and wings. Golfers don't love the way these clubs look, but they can't get around the fact that they work, providing stability and good roll. TaylorMade combined the performance of those mallets with a more traditional look. Like all the company's current putters, the Manta is white, which contrasts with the green of the grass so it's easier to align.

A central plug lets the company match the head weight to the shaft length.

A light aluminum body houses 50-gram tungsten weights low and back in the putter to increase MOI.

A soft Surlyn insert with angled grooves lifts the ball and gets it rolling. In tests the insert has raised forward roll by up to 150 rpm.
