FOR DEC. 16, 2013

A Child Shall Lead Them

For much of the past 12 months, smiles have been hard to come by in Newtown, Conn., but 14-year-old Jack Wellman has brought a lot of them to his hometown. After injuring his back playing football, Jack spearheaded a campaign to get Nike to donate uniforms and equipment to local teams, raised money for victims' families through the My Sandy Hook Family Fund and coached kids in the Newtown wrestling program. His inspiring resilience have made him the 2013 SPORTS ILLUSTRATED KIDS SportKid of the Year. Go to SI.com/longform to read the full story.

MY SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED will announce its choice for the 2013 Sportsman of the Year on Dec. 16. To celebrate that honor, SI's 1985 Sportsman, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, makes the case for his nomination: Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who Abdul-Jabbar says stands out as both as a tough competitor and a great teacher of the game.
