Duke defenseman Casey Carroll started his college lacrosse career in 2003, and last week he capped it with an NCAA title. Now married and a father of two, Carroll, 29, was a first-team All-America at Duke as a senior in '07. After graduation he enlisted in the Army's Third Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, in which fellow Duke lax player, Sgt. James Regan (1999--2002) had been serving when he was killed in Iraq in February '07. After five years that included tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, Sergeant Carroll returned to Duke in '12 to pursue an M.B.A. With one season of eligibility remaining, he helped the Blue Devils beat Notre Dame 11--9 for their second straight national title. Sharing the victory with Carroll and, by extension, Regan on Memorial Day made it special, said coach John Danowski. "It's Hollywood stuff. You can't make [it] up."
