FOR JUNE 9, 2014

While Payne Stewart's victory in the 1999 U.S. Open was great (The Greatest U.S. Open Ever), I think the greatest was the 1946 Open at Canterbury Golf Club near Cleveland, when Lloyd Mangrum beat Byron Nelson and Vic Ghezzi in a 36-hole Monday playoff.

John Anderson, Chapel Hill, N.C.

Your World Cup preview was excellent. I especially liked the section on Team USA (Meet the 23), although I would have preferred to see the players' hometowns instead of their club teams.

Bill Malec, O'Fallon, Ill.

I read Dan Patrick's Q&A with Reggie Miller (SCORECARD) and really enjoyed it. I saw Miller play several times in Indianapolis when he was with the Pacers, and yes, he sometimes brought the crazy. Even though he may not have a ring, he always had class.

Joseph Bush, Evansville, Ind.

Phil Taylor writes that "hardly anyone would argue that the [NBA] was better before the 2001 rules changes" (Go with the Flow), but I beg to differ. Like many fans, I rarely have conversations about the NBA because the lack of defense and the "me-before-we" mentality have rendered the game unwatchable.

John Zainea, Ann Arbor, Mich.

COVER

I was excited about your World Cup preview until I saw your LINEUP page. Seeing that there were four different covers but that I didn't get Clint Dempsey's U.S.A cover was very disappointing.

Graham Zusi will be the breakout star for the U.S. I think he and the other MLS players are going to surprise a lot of people, while Tim Howard will do his usual impersonation of a brick wall.

POINT AFTER

As a die-hard baseball fan, I know exactly what Steve Rushin means by "doing the K." I've been doing it since Little League. Baseball knowledge never gets old.
