FOR SEPT. 8, 2014

Your article on Stanford's upset of USC in 2007 (How Stanford ...) brought back a great memory from that day: Across town at the Rose Bowl, UCLA was locked in a tepid duel with Notre Dame. When the Cardinal's 24--23 winning score scrolled across the Goodyear blimp, both Fighting Irish and Bruins fans let out the biggest roar of the night. Goliath had been slain.

Steve Sichi, Los Angeles

While you were correct in stating that a noncadet (LEADING OFF) was in the student section at the Navy--Ohio State game, it should be noted that there are no other cadets in that photo. Students at the U.S. Naval Academy, the other men in the photo, are Midshipmen.

John Rok, Portsmouth, R.I.

How did the Midshipman standing to the left of Big Nut get away with not being clean-shaven? When I was in training to become a naval officer, I had to shave every day.

Mark Simon, Doylestown, Pa.

Thank you for the info about Lou Gehrig's 1928 World Series watch being sold at auction and how a portion of the proceeds will go to ALS charities (SCORECARD). This is an example of how ALS awareness is about more than the Ice Bucket Challenge and social media gimmicks.

Jack Walker, Aledo, Texas

COVER

Albert Chen's cover story on Andrew McCutchen shatters a lot of stereotypes about working-class families, teen parents, minorities and egotistical athletes. Thanks for the great read.

JUST MY TYPE

I wonder if Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel was surprised that Dan Patrick's column was more about Bill Belichick and Tom Brady than it was about him.

BEST OF LUCK

Nice job by Andy Benoit on his Andrew Luck feature story. It was informative and contained good research, with great writing. It brought to mind the chant, Pick One, Pick Two, Andrew Luck and RG Who?
