FOR OCT. 13, 2014

So Ned Yost manages his team a bit differently, and this is a crime against baseball (SCORECARD)? Give me a manager who can think for himself over one who is stuck in the age-old formula of how to play.

Carl Allamanno

San Leandro, Calif.

I know Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson looks pretty comfortable without using the laces on the football (Leading Off), however, imagine how dominant the Fighting Irish offense could be if he actually used them when he threw the ball.

Chris Natale, Wilmington, N.C.

Your item on ESPN's Muhammad and Larry documentary (SCORECARD) included an error. Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes fought only once, not three times. It was Joe Frazier and Ken Norton who went against Ali three times each.

Joseph Hawkins, Fort Washington, Md.

I'd like to thank Grant Wahl for his Landon Donovan interview (SCORECARD). Over the years I have enjoyed watching players like Donovan and Mia Hamm. I will miss seeing his entertaining style and everything he has done for U.S. soccer.

Billy H. Conn, Tucson

COVER

While the Royals are having an amazing year, to alter Hall of Fame announcer Jack Buck's classic "I can't believe what I just saw" quote from the 1988 World Series for your cover on Kansas City is blasphemy.

Springfield, Mo.

JUST MY TYPE

Given the NFL's recent issues with domestic violence, I wonder why Dan Patrick could not have found any other player besides Ben Roethlisberger, who has had his own history of legal troubles, to be the focus of a lighthearted Q-and-A column.

Marian Jones

Camlachie, Ont.

I'm still laughing at Roethlisberger's comment about hypothetically tripping others in a race. What is it with Mike Tomlin, the Steelers and tripping people?

Ezra Katz

Olney, Md.
