As the father of a high school football player, I would feel deeply wronged if his likeness were to be used in a video game or elsewhere without his consent. Ed O'Bannon is right to fight the NCAA on this, and we should all applaud the stand he has taken.
Dan Sander, Lake Stevens, Wash.
Michigan State's Jeremy Langford should have been included in your sidebar on Big Ten running backs running wild (Fast Company). Langford rushed for 1,360 yards this season, including nine games in which he ran for 100 or more, and had 19 touchdowns.
John Kalmar, Ferndale, Mich.

Although Melvin Gordon (LEADING OFF) had a great year and is close to breaking Barry Sanders's single-season record, it should be noted that Sanders needed only 11 games to rush for 2,628 yards in 1988. Gordon has played in 13 games and is still 292 yards short.

I really enjoyed your recent Reverse Sign of the Apocalypse on Siena guard Evan Hymes and his commitment to academics. We need more focus on athletes like Hymes who are making mature, responsible decisions.

Michael Rosenberg's essay on Chicago's Wendell Phillips Academy was truly inspiring. Phillips may have lost to Rochester in the state championship, but it is winning in the classroom and against life's adversities.
