Sports Illustrated HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Presented byTHE U.S. MARINE CORPS

This is an article from the Feb. 9, 2015 issue

Mikey Brannigan, a senior at Northport (N.Y.) High, is one of the top middle-distance runners in the country. The defending national champion in the outdoor two mile (8:53.59), he won the state Federation Championship 5K race last fall (15:30.40) and owns the country's best time in the indoor 3,200 meters this season (9:09.77). Mikey is also autistic; his parents were told he could end up in a group home. It wasn't until at age seven when he joined Rolling Thunder—a Long Island--based special-needs running club set to expand into a national program—that he found focus and direction. Now Mikey is training for the 2016 Paralympics in the hopes of achieving his Olympic dreams by '24. The lesson he wants people to take from him is simple: "You have it inside you," he says. "You can do anything you want." For more on Mikey, and to nominate your own candidate, visit SI.com/HSathlete
