HOT: HIS LEVELING BEST

This is an article from the July 8, 2013 issue

Gennady Golovkin defended his 160-pound title last Saturday in Mashantucket, Conn., KO'ing Matthew Macklin with an epic left hook to the body to move to 27--0. It was the Kazakh fighter's 13th knockout in a row, of which he said, "I was very happy with my performance."

NOT: SLEEPING GIANTS

The defending champs dropped their sixth straight last Saturday to fall four games below .500, with the NL's second-worst road record (14--27). Said manager Bruce Bochy after the 2--1 loss at Colorado, "It's not a good stretch. I'll leave it at that."

HOT: KATIE DID IT

Katie Ledecky (above), 16, shattered the 25-year-old national championship record in the 1,500-meter freestyle last Saturday (her third win of the meet), touching the wall in 15:47.15, which bested her 2012 Olympic teammate Chloe Sutton by 20.6 seconds.

NOT: UNITED THEY FALL

With a 2-12-3 record, D.C. United's nine points at week's end were an MLS low, and its goal differential was an atrocious -19. Per coach Ben Olsen, the refs haven't helped either. "It's a joke," he said of the officiating last Saturday. "We get the same clown show every weekend."

HOT: DAVIS COUP

Chris Davis is one high-flying Oriole. Last Saturday he became the first player to hit 30 homers, belting two in an 11--3 rout of the Yankees. That puts the 27-year-old just three shy of his 2012 total. He also led the AL in slugging (.724) and total bases (213) through Saturday.
