Chapter 4 is probably Resident Evil 4 remake’s biggest early chapter. The Lake is a huge area with branching paths that you can easily miss if you’re not keeping your eyes open for secrets. For everything you need to get through the main story of Chapter 4, read through our guide below.

Find the key to the Church – RE4 Remake

Waking up following the Del Lago fight, you’ll find everything has gone dark. The boat you rode in on is out of commission, so you’ll need to find another to traverse the lake. Exit the cabin and follow the trail, ducking under the rock up ahead. This will bring you to your first encounter with fully grown plagas. Tip: either hit the head with your bullets, or use a Flash Grenade to kill them instantly.

Inside a cave up ahead you’ll find the key to the Church, but you need two further keys to get it open, and you won’t have either yet. Exit to the right and check the map on the wall – it’ll mark the locations of the two keys. Follow the path, grabbing the Egg Hunt request on your way to the boat at the dock.

The Lake, unlocking the Church Key – RE4 Remake

The Lake is a huge area, and there are multiple spots where you can jump out of the boat and do some investigating, where you’ll find treasures, ammo, and a few secrets. To get everything, make sure to read our Red9 location guide, our Catch Me A Big Fish request guide, and our Egg Hunt request guide. Oh, let’s not forget to look out for the Clockwork Castellan, too.

The first main area we should go to is the Lake Cave Shrine. While moving through here, make sure to take note of the yellow markings on the walls – remember these symbols. At the end of the chamber, you’ll find a pedestal with several buttons and symbols. You need to push the correct three buttons to progress, which we explain in our Lake Symbol Puzzle guide. Once you get the gate open, you’ll find the Apostate’s Head, one of the two keys you need.

The next area you should head to is the Small Cave Shrine in the Northeast corner of the lake, and it resembles the merchant’s Lake hut from the original game. This will have another Lake Symbol Puzzle for you to solve. Once you solve it, you’ll find the Blasphemer’s Head.

Return to where you originally picked up this boat, and head back to where you saw the Church Key locked away. Place the Apostate’s Head and Blasphemer’s Head on the two hand pedestals, and take the Church Key. Return to the Merchant in this area and return to the Church via the Quarry.

El Gigante boss fight – RE4 Remake

This boss fight is remarkably similar to the original, so if you keep mobile, you should avoid getting hit. The two huts in this area also contain a bunch of ammo, but the giant can tear them apart and throw them at you. Once it takes enough damage a plaga will emerge from its back, which will take extra damage if you shoot it. You can also mount the giant and use your knife on the plaga if you manage to make it kneel.

Survive for long enough, and the dog from the last chapter, Huey, will make its appearance, running around the arena and distracting the giant for long enough for you to grab some supplies. You can take down El Gigante by keeping your distance and unloading bullets into its face and plaga to win.

Entering the Church – RE4 Remake

Finally, after a lot of hassle, we can access the Church with the key we picked up near the Lake. Run all the way back to the Church and use the key to open the front gate – just be wary of wolves infested with plagas on the way.

Search the lower level of the Church in detail to find the Blue Dial, and then open up the altar using the switch on the wall to access the stained glass puzzle. For a full solution, read our Church Stained Glass puzzle guide.
