Many titles have tried and failed to capture what makes the formula of Heroes of Might and Magic so special – they ended up as inferior copies or became something different altogether. Recently there has been hope for fans of this particular game type, though. Swedish developer Lavapotion rose to the challenge and channeled its passion for Heroes of Might and Magic into a title that is not only able to rival the OG – it may even have the capability to surpass it. And the best part is that you can get it at a bargain price right now.
Songs of Conquest is off 66% on Steam at the moment, allowing you to pick this fantastic game up at its lowest-ever price. This offer stands until April 11, 2024, so you’ve got some time to mull it over. Aside from your PC or laptop, Songs of Conquest works great on Steam Deck as well – just in case you need a dose of turn-based strategy on the go.
A large update to the game expanded its pool of available campaign maps just recently, adding nine additional options to the roster to cater to several play styles – bringing the game’s library close to 50 different maps.
There is Blade’s Edge, a small map for quick 1v1 action. There is Ashen Allies, a map geared towards casual co-op matches. The Great Excavation has space for up to four players, providing an environment for more co-op gameplay or a friendly match between four humans – and on its goes: Other additions are suited for Free For Alls or teams with uneven numbers, up towards an epic campaign map with room for eight players – that match will take you a while.
In Songs of Conquest, you take command of a specific faction and attempt to conquer the map or fulfill specific campaign objectives to secure victory. On the turn-based strategy map, you get to build up your towns, move around armies, and explore fantasy locations to haul treasure and bring home resources. When encountering a neutral or enemy army, you get to fight a tactical turn-based battle, which requires you to use your units and heroes to their full potential.
Thanks to various mechanical innovations, Songs of Conquest feels modern and fresh while staying true to the Heroes of Might and Magic formula – and with active development ongoing, Lavapotion’s game has the potential to surpass its great inspiration.
