Here’s a nice surprise for fans of super speedy shooters: It looks like a new Tribes game is on its game. Prophecy Games, an off-shoot studio that split from Hi-Rez in 2020, is behind the revival.

There is an official Discord server for the game, where interested users can join an upcoming playtest for the first-person shooter at the end of November 2023. Tribes is planned for release on PC via Steam with long-term plans for a subsequent console launch, though that will depend on the game’s reception.

First images of the project have been posted there as well, showing scenes that are reminiscent of 2012’s Tribes: Ascend from Hi-Rez, the latest entry into the series. Tribes’ gameplay is based around momentum and speed with players skiing down hills to build more and more tempo and then launch themselves into the air, staying mobile the entire time as they fight. Aerial battles and high-speed chases characterize the fights.

The Tribes screenshots (via ResetEra) that have appeared show Capture the Flag being played, which is a classic mode for the series, as it makes full use of the movement mechanics. The title doesn’t seem to have a name as of yet and is simply called “Tribes” on all of the visible UI elements.

Prophecy Games has already released one game in its short history – an extraction shooter called Starsiege: Deadzone, which was announced in 2022 and launched in Summer 2023.
