No. 5 Texas A&M cruises past Northwestern St 75-42
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) Texas A&M star Jordan Jones arrived at the postgame press conference without socks, shoes, ankle braces or her headband.
She'd handed them out on elementary school day after the No. 5 Aggies' 75-42 win over Northwestern State on Wednesday.
''I love them, I love all of them,'' Jones said of children. ''They're just so welcoming. There's something about the energy and positive vibes they bring.''
The same could be said of Jones, who collected a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists. The Aggies (8-0) nearly doubled up the Lady Demons (4-2) by halftime at 40-21. Courtney Walker added 10 points.
''Jordan Jones is on a roll,'' A&M coach Gary Blair said of his junior point guard. ''If she hadn't turned the ball over (twice late), she would have gone three straight games without a turnover.''
Janelle Perez led the Lady Demons (4-2) with nine points.
The fast-breaking Aggies held a 17-3 advantage in points off turnovers. They also dominated in the paint (28-10), on the boards (43-28) and off the bench (28-9).
''You're not going to a play a better defensive team over 94 feet than what we faced,'' Lady Demons coach Brooke Stoehr said. ''We knew it was going to be a monumental task.''
Northwestern State's game plan included 31 3-point attempts, but the Lady Demons connected on only five shots from beyond the arc.
''That's our strength, we defend the 3 pretty well,'' Blair said.
Jones went 3 of 4 from 3-point range and added seven rebounds for Texas A&M.
The Aggies shot 53 percent from the field compared to 28 percent for their opponents in front of an afternoon crowd of 7,712.
''That was a neat deal with all of the elementary students here, and exposing them to the game of women's basketball,'' said Stoehr, smiling. ''A lot of credit goes to goes to coach Blair and his staff for that.''
Added a grinning Blair afterward, ''Did you hear one quiet moment at all? Only during the national anthem.''
TIP-INS: Blair only needs 20 more victories to become the 15th head coach with 700 Division I victories. ... The Aggies defeated the Lady Demons 85-81 in the 1995 WNIT in Amarillo, Texas.
