LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) Baylor had something to prove after giving up 37 points in the fourth quarter to TCU earlier this week.
Nina Davis had 21 points and 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season to lead the fourth-ranked Lady Bears to a 66-36 win over Texas Tech on Saturday.
''Going into the fourth quarter with a 20-something point lead, I thought you saw a different basketball team than you saw at a TCU the other night,'' coach Kim Mulkey said of the 81-75 road victory Wednesday. ''We took care of the basketball, we made free throws, we defended with effort and we helped each other.''
The Lady Raiders (11-13, 2-11 Big 12), whose two conference wins came at home, stayed in the game until Baylor took over in the third quarter.
Following a fast-break layup by Leashja Grant, the Lady Raiders cut the deficit to five points at 29-24 with about seven minutes left in the third.
But then Baylor (25-1, 12-1) answered with a 12-1 run to extend its lead to a comfortable 41-25 under the six-minute mark.
''Our transition (defense) worked well in the first two quarters and that is something the coaches emphasized,'' said junior guard Ivonne CookTaylor, who led the Lady Raiders with 16 points and nine rebounds. ''And our rebounding was pretty good for the first two halves, but . we had lapses where we weren't playing defense and they converted. We just didn't retaliate.''
The Lady Bears increased their lead to 30 and outscored Texas Tech 23-9 in the third to earn their 12th straight win.
''Defense is going to win championships and it's what wins games,'' said Davis, who said her squad had something to prove after the TCU game. ''That's something that we take pride in.''
After recording 14 points in the first quarter, Texas Tech was held to single-digit scoring the rest of the way. The Lady Raiders shot 23 percent from the field for the game.
''We couldn't hang with them because we were not scoring the basketball,'' Texas Tech coach Candi Whitaker said. ''I thought we took good shots for the most part, but it seemed like they were all rimming out for a period there. We couldn't get one to go down.
''You have to stay in the scoring mode if you are going to upset Baylor and give yourself a chance.''
