Video & Analysis: Shea Patterson Discusses Level Of Frustration During Third Quarter

Michigan was rolling early but seemed to hit a massive road block in the third quarter.

Michigan was doing whatever it wanted to during the first half and got out to a 28-0 lead at the half against Illinois. After halftime it was a different story. It felt like half the team and the coaching staff decided to stay in the locker room for the third quarter, which ultimately allowed Illinois to get back into the game.

The Illini made it 28-25 before U-M woke up and started playing again but that third quarter certainly frustrated fans and obviously frustrated Shea Patterson and the rest of the Wolverines as well.

Brown's Breakdown

"I don't know what happened in the third quarter. Michigan had its way with Illinois in the first half and came out flat and lifeless in the second half. The first possession was a three-and-out. It consisted of a fumble, then a run for no gain and finally a bad pass by Patterson that was well behind wide receiver Tarik Black.

"Running back Christian Turner finally made an appearance but he almost immediately fumbled. Luckily for him and Michigan, his knee was down before the ball popped out but that pretty much summed up his day.

"Later on in the quarter, Patterson made a great throw to Nick Eubanks that he dropped and that stalled the drive. Hassan Haskins, who had a great first drive or two was seldom used and everything just looked out of sorts.

"Michigan finished the quarter with 11 yards of offense and obviously didn't score, while allowing Illinois to put 17 points on the board. It was bad. I'm not sure if the players stopped going hard or if the coaches let up in terms of play calling and approach, but it looked like a completely different team.

"Luckily Illinois isn't very good and Michigan was able to turn it back on the fourth quarter and ultimately win the game by 17. That kind of effort isn't going to work against the four tough teams left on Michigan's schedule."
