BREAKING: Top Safety Target Commits To Michigan State

The Spartans’ first summer commitment is a talented defensive back from Ohio!

Official visit season has bore fruit for Michigan State, as the Spartans just landed their first summer verbal commitment for the 2024 recruiting cycle.

Three-star Dayton (Ohio) Centerville safety Reggie Powers III just announced his verbal pledge to MSU, bringing the Spartans’ class up to four prospects. He chose Michigan State among a ‘Final 5’ which included Ohio State, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Northwestern.

Powers visited East Lansing over the weekend of June 9, and by all accounts head coach Mel Tucker, secondary coach Harlon Barnett and other members of MSU’s support staff knocked the visit out of the park, both with Powers and his family.

Immediately following that visit, Powers cancelled future official visits to Ohio State and Cincinnati. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound defensive back had made his decision.

The Buckeyes were considered the favorite for the majority of Powers’ recruitment, but Ohio State had the three-star lower on their recruiting board. Michigan State used that to its advantage, snagging the Dayton product away from the Buckeye State.

Powers is considered the No. 585 overall prospect, No. 57 safety and the No. 19 player from Ohio in the 2024 class, according to 247Sports' Composite rankings. The Ohio native's offer sheet suggests he's underrated as a prospect however, as Powers has garnered 29 total offers including Louisville, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Virginia, Iowa State, Boston College and others in addition to his ‘Final 5’.

With the addition of Powers, Michigan State’s 2024 recruiting class is up to four members. The Spartans had previously received commitments from four-star Murfreesboro (Tenn.) cornerback Jaylen Thompson, three-star Mt. Pleasant (Mich.) interior offensive lineman Andrew Dennis and three-star Baltimore (Mary.) IOL Logan Bennett.

Michigan State's 2024 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 66 in the country, and 13th in the Big Ten Conference, though that is of little concern this early in the cycle.
