3 Recruits Michigan State Is Building Momentum With

The Spartans could be adding to their 2024 recruiting class soon…

June is underway. Michigan State has hosted official visits for two weekends now. With only three recruits currently in the Spartans class, the coaching staff has been working to build momentum.

Head coach Mel Tucker has brought in another group of blue-chip recruits, and needs to capitalize. Halfway through the month, Michigan State is picking up steam with some of the key prospects it’s brought in on visits, including the following three.

Three-Star Dayton (Ohio) Centerville Safety Reggie Powers III

Powers is a 6-foot-1, 195-pound hard-hitting safety. He has an instinct to find the ball and isn’t afraid of contact. Rated the No. 580 player nationally in the 247Sports Composite, many recruiting sites project him to land at Michigan State.

Another intriguing factor is the other programs that are recruiting Powers. The Dayton native is also considering Ohio State, Cincinnati, Northwestern, and Pittsburgh. But OSU and MSU are the two that stand out to Powers, and would be a huge recruiting win over the Buckeyes.

A commitment from Powers would also be important for recruiting in Ohio. The Spartans haven’t landed a player from the Buckeye State since the 2021 recruiting class. Getting back into the state would be huge for the program moving forward.

Four-Star Tampa (Fla.) Carrollwood Day Running Back Anthony Carrie

Michigan State may be closing in on another player from Florida. Carrie, a 6-foot, 185-pound running back has shows bursts in speed and the ability to make tacklers miss. His vision and lateral movement helped him average 7.1 yards per carry.

Carrie goes to the same high school that incoming freshman cornerback Eddie Pleasant attended. Having a relationship there may help the Spartans land the No. 253 player in the country.

Carrie has also scheduled official visits to North Carolina and Notre Dame. Other schools interested are Ole Miss and South Carolina. Running backs coach Effrem Reed has done a great job recruiting in his second year, and landing Carrie would be a big win.

Four-Star Mukwonago (Wis.) Offensive Tackle Nathan Roy

Roy had already set a commitment date for June 20, with his top three being UCLA, Minnesota and MSU. Taking officials to all those schools, East Lansing was his second-to-last stop before his commitment. The 6-foot-5, 275-pound lineman is the No. 187 player in the 247Sports Composite.

This would be another recruiting win for offensive line coach Chris Kapalovic and staff. Recruiting experts have not predicted a landing spot for Roy, but the Spartans' visit helped MSU’s position. Current MSU offensive lineman commit AJ Dennis was on campus as well, helping recruit Roy.

This was Michigan State’s last chance to make an impact on Roy before he makes a decision. After his visit to Minnesota this weekend, there will be some clarity where Roy may be going.
